The week that a lot of Texas football fans have waited for has arrived with the annual Red River Rivalry game against the Oklahoma Sooners on tap. New Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian has his opportunity to get his first real marquee win with this program this weekend against the biggest rival that this team faces annually.

If Sark and the Longhorns can come away with a win over the rival Sooners and head coach Lincoln Riley on Oct. 9, it would go a long way to prove that this program is close to breaking through to national contender status. More immediately, the impact that a win in Red River over Oklahoma could have for the Longhorns on the field and on the recruiting trail is dramatic.

Can Texas football topple Spencer Rattler and Oklahoma in Red River this weekend?

Texas could continue its hot run on the recruiting trail for the 2022 class this fall with something as impressive as a win over Oklahoma. And Texas could really establish itself as the set in stone Big 12 favorite if they top Oklahoma in Red River. Texas has one of the more difficult stretches of the schedule that its facing right now.

Last weekend, Texas passed the first test of this three-game gauntlet in the Big 12 slate with a win over head coach Gary Patterson and the stingy TCU Horned Frogs on the road in Fort Worth. Now, Texas has to top the Oklahoma schools in the next two weekends.

But the first focus, of course, has to be on pulling off the upset of the Sooners this weekend. Here’s a look into three reasons why the Longhorns can upset the Sooners on Oct. 9.
