Texas Football: 3 reasons the Longhorns will upset OU
Oklahoma offensive line is discombobulated
I touched on this point on that last part of this list, but the Oklahoma offensive line is having some serious consistency issues at the outset of this season. While this is something that might work itself out in a few weeks, Oklahoma needs more steady play from the offensive line if this offense is to start finding its usual rhythm under Riley.
The loss of former standout center Creed Humphrey is hurting the Sooners in the trenches more so than some might’ve originally thought. Oklahoma’s lowest graded offensive lineman this year consistently is center Andrew Raym, who has taken most of the snaps this fall trying to replace what the team lost in Humphrey.
But Oklahoma has turned to Robert Congel a little bit more of late to try and make up for the lost production from Humphrey. But nothing has worked out well at the center position on a consistent basis.
Raym is still likely to be the starter for Oklahoma at center this weekend.
Other offensive linemen that Oklahoma has gotten pretty inconsistent play out of so far this season include starting guards Marquis Hayes and Chris Murray. Hayes is already on pace to allow a career-high in total pressures. His effectiveness rating in pass protection is already at a career-low this season.
If Texas can get a good push inside and wreak some havoc on the likes of Rattler, Brooks, running back Eric Gray, etc., this could be a nice effort for Texas in the trenches. Texas could certainly hold the edge with its defensive line, but we have to see a more sustained push from senior defensive lineman Moro Ojomo and senior edge rusher Jacoby Jones. It would also be nice to see some signs of life from former transfer linebackers/edge rushers Ray Thornton and Ovie Oghoufo in this game.
