A big second-half collapse for new head coach Steve Sarkisian and No. 21 ranked Texas football doomed this team in their quest to upset head coach Lincoln Riley and the No. 6 ranked Oklahoma Sooners last weekend. Texas once held a 21-point lead over the Sooners, but could not take any opportunity provided to them to close out this game down the stretch.

The nightmare scenario that played out for Sark and the Longhorns in the second half led to a loss to the Sooners in the annual Red River Rivalry game back on Oct. 9 by the final score of 55-48. This is the second loss for the Longhorns this season that really stings. It wasn’t just the fact of losing a winnable game to Oklahoma, it was the way in which it happened.

Texas football still has some personnel shifts to make after the loss to OU

That is similar to how Longhorns fans felt following the humbling road loss around one month ago at the hands of head coach Sam Pittman and the Arkansas Razorbacks by a three-possession margin.

There is plenty to learn from this game in reference to the Longhorns players. The same could be said for the coaching staff, especially new co-defensive coordinators/linebackers coaches Pete Kwiatkowski and Jeff Choate.

One thing to take away from this loss to Oklahoma is the fact that more personnel changes are likely needed, especially in the trenches for the Longhorns. Texas was getting pushed around in the trenches on both sides of the ball in the second half against the Sooners, and all game long in the loss to Arkansas.

Ahead of Texas’ critical meeting with the No. 12 ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys at home on Oct. 16, here’s a look at three backups who should start for this team after the meltdown against Oklahoma.
