One of the bigger misses of late on the trail for new special teams coordinator/tight ends coach Jeff Banks and the 2022 Texas football recruiting class in the last couple of weeks was the touted four-star IMG Academy tight end Jaleel Skinner. On Oct. 8, Banks and the Texas coaching staff watched Skinner pass on their offer to commit to safeties coach Charles Kelly and the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Skinner chose Alabama over other top schools such as the Longhorns, Florida Gators, Miami Hurricanes, and Florida State Seminoles. The nation’s top-ranked tight end prospect for the 2022 recruiting cycle was someone that Banks and the Longhorns seemingly prioritized more so than any other prospect in this position group in their class.

Yet, the likes of new head coach Steve Sarkisian, Banks, and the Longhorns staff have continued to push to flip a number of their top blue-chip targets on the recruiting trail that are committed elsewhere this fall. And that looks to be the case with Skinner, despite his recent commitment to the Crimson Tide.

Jeff Banks and Texas football still expecting 4-Star TE Jaleel Skinner for the Oklahoma State game

A report confirmed by 247Sports on Oct. 13 notes that Skinner is expected to be in attendance this weekend as the Longhorns take on head coach Mike Gundy and the No. 12 ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys for a critical Big 12 matchup at DKR on Oct. 16. That is huge for Banks and the Longhorns to get Skinner on the Forty Acres for such a big visit weekend.

It is really looking like this will be the biggest visit weekend of the fall, by a good margin, for Sark and the Longhorns. So many premier prospects that are targets of the Longhorns 2022 and 2023 classes will be on the Forty Acres to watch Texas to and get a big rebound win against a top-15 ranked Oklahoma State team.

This also shows that Texas could still have Skinner’s mind open to see if they can prove that this could be a better fit for him than Alabama. While that sounds like a huge task to take on, and it is, of course, there are a lot of former Alabama coaches that know what it takes to beat out head coach Nick Saban on the recruiting trail.

Skinner was already scheduled to have a visit with Texas for the Oklahoma State game this weekend. But it is notable that he didn’t cancel this visit following his commitment to Alabama last week.

Texas is set to host dozens of key blue-chip prospects that are targets of the 2022 and 2023 recruiting classes for the Oklahoma State game this weekend. Getting a win over Oklahoma State following the tragic second-half collapse that resulted in a loss to the Oklahoma Sooners in the Red River Rivalry game this weekend could be huge.
