One of the most heavily followed rumors around the college football landscape surrounds the opposing starting quarterback from the opponent that Texas football faced last weekend, the Oklahoma Sooners and sophomore Spencer Rattler. After some untimely turnovers and missed throws in the first half in the Red River Rivalry game last weekend for Oklahoma against Texas, head coach Lincoln Riley pulled Rattler in favor of freshman quarterback Caleb Williams.

The Sooners subsequently saw Williams lead them to a massive 55-48 comeback win over new head coach Steve Sarkisian and the No. 21 ranked Longhorns. Most would think that Riley and the Sooners would give Williams the start from here on out this fall after the way he played in that comeback win over Texas back on Oct. 9.

As Oklahoma gets ready for their battle with head coach Gary Patterson and the TCU Horned Frogs on Oct. 16, they have yet to name a starting quarterback. There might be a fear that TCU could game plan better if they knew who the starting quarterback would be. Or maybe Riley fears Rattler transferring if he names Williams the starting quarterback about halfway through the season.

Rattler’s turnover issues are something that has nearly cost the Sooners a number of occasions this fall. Oklahoma managed to escape the West Virginia Mountaineers, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Tulane Green Wave, and the Longhorns. Rattler has a few fumbles on the season along with five interceptions so far.

That’s not necessarily terrible, it’s just the lack of rhythm for the Oklahoma offense compared to what we’re used to from Riley’s groups since he took over for Bob Stoops as the Sooners head coach.

Nonetheless, there is the idea that Rattler could imminently land in the NCAA Transfer Portal if Williams does become the permanent starting quarterback. And it’s hard to imagine that Williams isn’t named the starting quarterback at this point.

Oklahoma has an important meeting with TCU on tap this weekend, and Williams looks like the best candidate to be named the starting quarterback. The momentum all seems to be with Williams after the win over Texas last weekend.

It is worth following this storyline since who Riley names as the starting quarterback could really help shape the Big 12 landscape for the rest of the fall. Rattler potentially landing in the transfer portal would also dramatically shift the college football landscape.
