Texas Football: 5 overreactions from the meltdown loss vs. OK State
Casey Thompson is still the answer, not Hudson Card
While this was the worst game of the season so far for the former four-star recruit and redshirt junior quarterback Casey Thompson, it’s not time to press the panic button for Sark and the coaching staff at this position. Texas fans should be patient with Thompson, despite the two losses against the Oklahoma schools.
Sophomore signal-caller Hudson Card faced a similar peril in terms of a lack of production behind center when he was yanked for Thompson in the loss to the Arkansas Razorbacks from back on Sep. 11. But this didn’t feel like the type of situation where it was necessary to replace the starting quarterback in the face of a potential loss.
And I still firmly believe that Thompson is the guy that Sark should go with against the Baylor Bears in the first game out of the bye week on the road on Oct. 30. Thompson still sounds like he has Sark’s backing from the Monday press conference this week.
In the loss to Oklahoma State, Thompson registered 15 completions on 27 passing attempts, good for 179 passing yards, one passing touchdown, and two picks. Thompson was under constant pressure in this game (on 11 dropbacks). He had nearly a season-low 2.43 seconds to throw the ball in this game.
The struggles of the offensive line shook Thompson. He tossed a costly pick-six to Oklahoma State when it looked like Texas could put this game away. And he tossed another bad pick when he was looking to complete a pass to Xavier Worthy in what would be the final drive of this game for Texas.
Don’t panic about this performance from Thompson. It wasn’t good, and he needs to get his mind right ahead of the Baylor game. But he’s still the guy that performed really well against Oklahoma and the Texas Tech Red Raiders. A strong bounce-back against Baylor would not be surprising from Thompson.
