It might not take too long until new head coach Chris Beard and the 2022 Texas basketball recruiting class get their second commit. And if Texas could land the second commit in the 2022 class that is currently trending their way, it would be the second five-star prospect in the mix.

Beard and the Longhorns currently hold one commit in the 2022 class thanks to a pledge from five-star Kimball point guard Arterio Morris. Landing a commitment from Morris gave the Longhorns quite the start to the 2022 class. And with Texas missing out on some big-time targets in the 2022 class, it’s huge to see Beard finding success with other top prospects elsewhere.

Texas missed out on the likes of the elite five-star shooting guard Keyonte George and four-star power forward Kijani Wright. It also doesn’t look good for Texas with five-star combo guard Cason Wallace at this point.

Texas basketball gaining traction fast with 5-Star SF Dillon Mitchell

But Texas is looking to sit in a great position right now with another five-star target of the 2022 class, Montverde Academy small forward Dillon Mitchell. The two most recent expert 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions have the commitment of Mitchell landing with the Longhorns over the rest of the competition.

This lines up since Texas just hosted Mitchell for what appeared to be a successful official visit in Austin on Oct. 15. And it was just back on Sep. 27 that Mitchell received his scholarship offer from Texas in the first place.

Texas could still face stiff competition from the likes of the Florida State Seminoles and Tennessee Volunteers in the race to land a commitment from Mitchell. The last official visit Mitchell took other than the one with Texas last weekend was with Florida State back in July.

Mitchell also had official visits with the Ohio State Buckeyes and Tennessee back in June. Texas got in the running to land Mitchell late, but the traction appears to have come on almost immediately.

Texas could really have a potent 2022 class in store just ahead of the Early Signing Period by landing a commitment from Mitchell. The Florida native is ranked slightly lower than Morris, but would still be a very welcome addition to the Longhorns 2022 class.
