Heading into the season, the last thing on anyone’s mind was figuring out what newly hired assistant coaches with the Texas football program could be potential head coaching candidates a little bit later down the road. The focus was on new head coach Steve Sarkisian to get this program headed in the right direction.

And that still left a large emphasis on key assistants improving the player development and game planning week-over-week to get more success in the win column compared to previous coaching regimes.

Moreover, it’s hard to say that Sark and the Longhorns’ new staff have improved on the matter of success in the win column much compared to the regime under previous head coach Tom Herman. It does appear that Sark will at least set a higher floor than fellow former Texas head coach Charlie Strong if nothing else, though.

Before we really get too deep into the expectations that Sark has with the Longhorns compared to past head coaches (because it’s way too early to do so right now), the matter of his assistants potentially getting other head coaching jobs in the not too distant future is actually a relevant conversation right now.

Not necessarily because the Longhorns are blowing teams out of the water, but a few Texas assistants are getting recognition as potential head coaching candidates elsewhere. It’s not likely going to be the opening with the LSU Tigers or USC Trojans that will pry away a Texas assistant. But the opening with the Washington State Cougars is one to watch.

And there could be others to watch that emerge in the coming weeks and months. With that in mind, here’s a look into three current Texas assistants who could be head coaching candidates in the not too distant future.
