Texas Football: Most the ‘buzz around’ Evan Stewart favor the Longhorns
The prospects that form the most important part of the remaining big board for the 2022 Texas football recruiting class are commanding most of the headlines on the trail this fall too. That namely makes up the likes of elite five-star prospects like Bowie interior offensive lineman Devon Campbell, Frisco-Liberty wide receiver Evan Stewart, and North Shore cornerback Denver Harris.
Other key prospects for the Longhorns such as four-star interior offensive lineman Earnest Greene and four-star athlete Larry Turner-Gooden are important for new head coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff to make the right impression with. But those wouldn’t be more important to Sark and the Longhorns than landing a commitment from someone like Campbell, Stewart, and/or Harris.
Texas is hanging around in the thick of each of these recruitments. And the lone prospect of those three that Sark and the Longhorns once held a commitment from is the Frisco, TX, native Stewart.
For roughly one month last offseason, Sark and the Longhorns held a commitment from Stewart in the 2022 class. But it didn’t take long for him to re-open his recruitment to programs like the Florida Gators, Alabama Crimson Tide, and LSU Tigers, along with the Longhorns still.
Despite de-committing from Texas more than six months ago, this school is still very much hanging around among the top picks for Stewart at this point of his recruitment. In fact, Texas looked to be the favorite throughout much of Stewart’s recruitment since his de-commitment from this school.
Texas and Florida looked like the two schools to beat of late in the race to land a commitment from Stewart. But his top school has seemingly ebbed and flowed since the turn of the calendar year. And the same could hold true throughout this fall.
Texas football could still be at the top in the race for 5-Star WR Evan Stewart
Yet, in a piece from 247Sports that detailed bold predictions for where the top remaining uncommitted 2022 prospects could end up, Stewart was mentioned to still have the “most buzz” around the Longhorns. Florida and Alabama were tabbed as two other top schools for Stewart.
It’s good to hear that Texas is still generating a lot of buzz with Stewart. This all comes despite the recent issues on the field for Sark and the Longhorns to find success in the win column.
The lack of ability to close out games cost the Longhorns of late. But in terms of any negative impact on the recruiting trail following losses to the two Oklahoma schools in the Big 12 in the last two games, Sark and the Longhorns appeared to have avoided any of those issues.
That is a good break for Texas on the recruiting trail.
Hopefully, this will lead Texas to eventually get back the commitment of Stewart.
As someone who likes the media spotlight, Stewart is likely going to see out the rest of his visits before he announces a decision. Stewart just concluded a visit over the weekend with head coach Jimbo Fisher and the Texas A&M Aggies.
And Stewart still has a visit on the books with head coach Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide, set for Nov. 6.
Texas does hold commitments from two blue-chip wideouts in the 2022 class. But getting the commitment of Stewart back with the Longhorns 2022 class would put the cherry on top for a truly elite group of wide receivers for this cycle.
