Texas football takes on the No. 16 ranked Baylor Bears this weekend in one of the most crucial matchups of the season. It feels like we say week in and week out that Texas is facing a must-win type of game, but this one really feels that way. Texas is hoping to snap a two-game losing skid following their loss to the Oklahoma State Cowboys and Oklahoma Sooners ahead of the bye week.
New head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns need to right the ship after two nearly unbelievable losses where the team couldn’t hold onto double-digit leads in the second half. The nature of the losses to Oklahoma and Oklahoma State were a little bit different. But the similarity is the fact that Texas coughed up multiple possession leads to fall short in each game.
Baylor is going to be a difficult opponent in this game for Sark and the Longhorns. The lone loss for this rising Baylor team under head coach Dave Aranda came at the hands of Oklahoma State and head coach Mike Gundy a few weeks ago.
More specifically, Baylor comes into this meeting with Texas sporting a record of 6-1 (3-1 Big 12), seeking its second straight win. Baylor is also coming off a bye week ahead of this matchup with the Longhorns.
Meanwhile, Texas comes into this game with a record of 4-3 (2-2 Big 12) after their two losses to the Oklahoma schools in the previous two outings ahead of the bye week.
Entering this game, Texas is a 2.5-point underdog at the hands of the Bears. And the ESPN matchup predictor (powered by the Football Power Index) actually gives Texas nearly a 54 percent chance to win this game in Waco.

It seems like Texas can’t get anything but the 11 a.m. CT kickoff time slot in Big 12 play this season. Texas kicked off at 11 a.m. CT in each of their five Big 12 games thus far, including the one against Baylor this weekend. Injured Texas football players
As far as new injury notes are concerned, there’s not much to speak of for the Longhorns coming out of the bye week. And that’s a really good thing given some of the injuries that started to mount for Sark and the Longhorns in the weeks leading up to the first bye of the season.
Senior linebacker DeMarvion Overshown was cleared through concussion protocol in the week of practice leading up to this game. The bye week did come at a really good time for Overshown and this group of linebackers since he should be ready to go against Baylor.
With Overshown returning for Texas in this meeting with Baylor, he will be one of the starting linebackers alongside former walk-on Luke Brockermeyer. Expect Texas to give a healthy amount of reps, though, to the likes of sophomore linebacker Jaylan Ford.
Texas is still missing the likes of redshirt sophomore wide receiver Jordan Whittington, who was originally injured in the loss to Oklahoma. This is a big loss for Texas, but an anticipated one as other wideouts need to step up in the wake of the absence of Whittington.
Picking Texas football vs. Baylor
If there were ever a time for Texas to right the ship and hang onto a lead to establish some type of momentum down the stretch, you would think it would be now. Texas had a lot of time to reflect on what went wrong against the two Oklahoma schools and they should be ready for a good Baylor team this weekend.
Redshirt junior quarterback Casey Thompson needs to come out with a strong response after one of the worst games of his career in the loss to Oklahoma State. Expect the likes of Thompson and the running back duo of Bijan Robinson and Keilan Robinson to come out firing against Baylor.
This is a tough Baylor defense, but one that Texas can score on if they get the jump on them right away. This spot feels like one where Texas can pull off the upset on the road.
