A fast-rising target of the 2023 Texas football recruiting class, four-star Arlington-Seguin cornerback Jamel Johnson, is now set to announce his commitment decision later this week. Texas looks to be one of the top schools in the running to land a commitment from Johnson, and that could be coming very soon now.

New head coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff are still without a solid commitment in the 2023 class at this point in time. But that could be changing for the Longhorns later this week. Johnson is reportedly set to announce his decision live on CBS Sports HQ on Nov. 4 at 8 a.m. CT. He will be getting an early start to the day where he announces his commitment.

A couple of months ago, Johnson announced his top 10 schools on Twitter. The other nine schools along with the Longhorns were the Alabama Crimson Tide, Auburn Tigers, Oklahoma Sooners, Ohio State Buckeyes, USC Trojans, LSU Tigers, Florida State Seminoles, Michigan Wolverines, and Texas A&M Aggies.

Johnson’s top 10 finalist schools were littered with blue bloods that would be tough competitors for the Longhorns on the recruiting trail. Texas appears to have established a good edge on the trail for Johnson, though.

Texas football could soon land a commitment from 4-Star 2023 CB Jamel Johnson

Texas was trending to land the commitment of Johnson for around the past month. New Texas special teams coordinator/tight ends coach Jeff Banks and cornerbacks coach Terry Joseph did a nice job as the top recruiters after Johnson of late.

Texas has good reason to be confident heading into the decision day for Johnson. All expert 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions favor his commitment to land with the Longhorns. And the Rivals FutureCast also has all of their analysts and publishers picking Johnson to land on the Forty Acres.

Landing a commitment from Johnson would be a solid way for Sark and this staff to form a good foundation on the defensive side of the ball in the 2023 class. Sark took a rather patient approach to building out this 2023 class, and we’ll start to see soon how that strategy plays out.

Johnson is a highly ranked blue-chip target of the Longhorns 2023 class. He ranks as the nation’s No. 187 2023 high school prospect, No. 15 safety, and No. 27 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite).
