There are now two notable head coaching jobs open around the Big 12 already this fall, and one could be looking into a former Texas football bench boss as a candidate for their next hire. Former Texas head coach Tom Herman didn’t receive all that much buzz around the college football landscape since he was let go back in January.

Yet, that could change soon as the college football coaching carousel starts to spin faster and faster this fall. And with the TCU Horned Frogs and Texas Tech Red Raiders both having head coaching job openings already this fall, Herman’s name was sure to get brought up at least once.

That is the case as one 247Sports writer/analyst, Carl Reed, made the case for a program like TCU to consider Herman as a head coaching candidate this year. Reed mentions that it’s soon to be time for essentially some non-blue blood programs to start looking to Herman as a legitimate coaching candidate.

Some of the reasons he mentions as to why Herman should be considered are his recruiting ability, some recent success on the field, and experience in rapidly improving the Houston Cougars in his two years as their head coach. It is true that, within the last decade, Herman has the best winning percentage of any Texas head coach.

Granted, that could change in a hurry depending on what Texas is able to do in the next season and a half or so under first-year head coach Steve Sarkisian.

Herman did help Houston land blue-chip commits on a regular basis, which is not usual for a Group of Five program. And Texas was consistently signing top five or 10 ranked classes in the nation while Herman was entrenched as the head coach.

But the buyout that he received from Texas would be difficult to top financially. He has a reason to not have too much buy-in at the moment to return to a head coaching job at the college level.

TCU could be an interesting job opening for Herman to consider, and vice versa. With TCU parting ways with the respected longtime head coach Gary Patterson this fall, the replacement is going to have to be a quality candidate.

Herman is currently an offensive analyst/special projects coach with the Chicago Bears in the NFL under head coach Matt Nagy. It will be interesting to see what prospects arise for him in the next 12 or 18 months at the college level.
