Texas Football: Predicting next 2023 commit after Jamel Johnson
On the morning of Nov. 4, the 2023 Texas football recruiting class got its highly anticipated first commit in the mix in the form of the touted four-star Arlington-Seguin cornerback Jamel Johnson. Texas and new head coach Steve Sarkisian will be looking to keep this commitment to stick this time around as Johnson is the first in this class since the de-commitment of the elite five-star El Campo running back Rueben Owens.
Landing a commitment from Johnson could help to get a wave of momentum going for the Longhorns 2023. At least that’s the hope for Sark and this Longhorns staff following a very patient process to get the first commitment that sticks in the 2023 class since the de-commitment of Owens over the summer.
Texas can now get off and running in the 2023 class ahead of the time when the Early Signing Period to start rounding out the 2022 cycle arrives next month.
Where is Texas football going after the saga involving Rueben Owens and Jamel Johnson?
It’s also good to see Texas getting help at a position of need in the secondary. Unless Texas lands a commitment from the elite five-star North Shore cornerback Denver Harris in the 2022 class, they will need help in the 2023 class at the cornerback position.
And while Texas got off to a nice start in the 2023 class by landing a commitment from a talented and potent blue-chip defensive back, the foundation needs to continue to be built out in the near future. Landing the commitment from Johnson already puts the Longhorns 2023 class in the top 25 in the national class rankings (per 247Sports).
With that in mind, here’s a look into the prediction for who the next commit in the Longhorns 2023 class could be after getting one out of Johnson to kick things off.
