Ex-Texas football OT Samuel Cosmi on PFF Midseason All-Rookie Team
As the Texas football program struggles to find success in the win column at this point of the regular season at the college level, some notable former players from the program are finding success at the next level. That is especially true for the second round 2021 NFL Draft pick and rookie Washington Football Team offensive tackle Samuel Cosmi.
Cosmi was the first former Longhorn off the board in the 2021 NFL Draft, selected 51st overall in the second round by the Washington Football Team. The next former Longhorn off the board was the former star outside linebacker Joseph Ossai who was picked by the Cincinnati Bengals in the third round of the draft. But Ossai is set to miss the season after he was injured early in the preseason.
Nonetheless, Cosmi is at least having a really solid first half of the NFL regular season. He’s definitely earned himself a starting spot for good along the Washington offensive line. And he was able to make that type of impression very early on in his rookie campaign.
Former Texas football OT Samuel Cosmi shining for Washington as a rookie
For his efforts through the first half of his rookie campaign, Cosmi was named to the midseason NFL All-Rookie Team from Pro Football Focus this week. PFF is very high on Cosmi, giving the following glowing review from his play in the first half of the regular season.
"It’s a shame Cosmi went down with an ankle injury against the Saints in Week 5 because he was in the midst of his most impressive game of the season. Cosmi was a physical freak for the position coming out of Texas, and for him to already have a 77.0 overall grade is incredible news for Washington. He has everything necessary to be a Pro Bowl tackle."
The fact that PFF mentions that Cosmi has the potential to be a “Pro Bowl tackle” says everything you need to know about how Cosmi played in the first half of his rookie campaign. It’s sad, though, that Cosmi went down with an injury, like Ossai did, early in his rookie season.
Cosmi is the lone former Longhorn that made the midseason NFL All-Rookie Team from PFF. Ossai might’ve had a good shot to make this list if he was able to stay healthy up to this point. Ossai still has a lot of potential for the Bengals for next season.
Maybe Cosmi would be contending for Pro Bowl selection during his rookie campaign were this ankle injury was to not have happened when it did.
This honor going Cosmi’s way still shows how much potential he has to have a long, successful, and accomplished NFL career. It’s just the beginning for him, and as long as he’s able to stay healthy over the long haul, Cosmi will be a special player for Washington.
