After a very slow start to the game against head coach Matt Campbell and the Iowa State Cyclones on the road in Ames on Nov. 6, the Texas football program made a big change at quarterback again. This change seemed more timely too from redshirt junior quarterback Casey Thompson back to sophomore Hudson Card.

At the outset of the regular season, new head coach Steve Sarkisian went with Card as the Longhorns starting quarterback. But a bad outing in the loss to the Arkansas Razorbacks forced Sark’s hand (a bit late at that) to change from Card to Thompson.

Up until late in the first quarter against Iowa State, Sark stuck with Thompson through a lot of struggles. Three straight losses to have some level of blame to fall on the shoulders of Thompson. He was not very good for the Longhorns against the Oklahoma State Cowboys. And he missed some key throws in the loss last weekend at the hands of the Baylor Bears.

When Thompson struggled out of the gates against Iowa State on the night of Nov. 6, it didn’t take long for Sark to pull the plug on him. He put up just two passing yards on two completions. That all came on six passing attempts. Thompson had no touchdowns and no picks, but one drop and a few missed passes in the few drives he led in this game.

It was right before the end of the first quarter that Sark pulled the plug on Thompson for Card. This move was not completely surprising, but it was more abrupt and timely than when Sark made this change the other way around against Arkansas.

This game was low-scoring from the outset. Iowa State and Texas have just three points on the board between the two of them getting close to the halfway point of the second quarter, with the Cyclones owning the edge.

dark. Next. Why Texas can upset Iowa State

In the snaps that he did have on the season coming into the Iowa State game, Card registered 314 passing yards on 39 passing attempts (9.1 adjusted yards per passing attempt), with two passing touchdowns, no interceptions, and one rushing touchdown.
