Texas Football: Iowa State fans troll Horns with monkey sign
There was some level of hope heading into the weekend that new head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas football program would be able to pull off the upset against head coach Matt Campbell and the Iowa State Cyclones on the road on the night of Nov. 6. Texas was around a one-touchdown underdog in the spread heading into this game, though.
This also didn’t feel like a game where Sark and the Longhorns had much of a shot unless they played a solid 60 minutes. And while that sounds obvious, it’s not something that the Longhorns showed they can do really since the start of Big 12 play.
What amounted to a stretch that was the real gauntlet of the Big 12 slate for Sark and the Longhorns turned into something that really decimated any chance they had to make this a successful season. Texas now sits on top of a four-game losing streak following maybe the most thoroughly embarrassing loss of the 2021 campaign thus far.
Texas football and Steve Sarkisian trolled again vs. Iowa State
Texas fell short to Iowa State on Nov. 6 by the convincing final score of 30-7. This is one of the two worst losses ever for the Longhorns to the Cyclones. And the team once again figured out how to blow a second-half lead. But this one didn’t see Texas cough up a double-digit lead in the usual fashion we’re used to seeing out of them now.
All of the comically bad things that are coming away from this team right now were highlighted by one sign from a few Iowa State fans ahead of the kickoff of this game. Some Iowa State fans held up a Horns down sign that had a dancer hanging of one horn, and a monkey hanging off the other. This is obviously in reference to the “Pole Assassin” situation associated with the significant other of new special teams coordinator/tight ends coach Jeff Banks.
This narrative is just one of many that can distract from this team as to what’s going on off the field. Texas had a couple of key losses to the NCAA Transfer Portal in the last few weeks, and also saw a spat between Sark and redshirt junior wide receiver, Joshua Moore, last week.
Following this 23-point loss to the Cyclones on Nov. 6, Sark and the Longhorns now own a record of 4-5 (2-4 Big 12). The chances to make a bowl game are now on life support with three games remaining in the regular season.
