It was largely expected that new head coach Chris Beard and No. 5 ranked Texas basketball would roll through the Houston Baptist Huskies without issue in the regular season opener at home at the Frank Erwin Center on the night of Nov. 9. While Texas did easily cover the spread in this 92-48 win over Houston Baptist to open up the regular season slate, this game had another focus.

Beating Houston Baptist was about starting to figure out the rotation and gaining some confidence and momentum ahead of the giant non-conference matchup on the road against the No. 1 ranked Gonzaga Bulldogs in Spokane, WA, on Nov. 13. Taking on head coach Mark Few and his Zags could wind up being the toughest test of the entire season for Beard and the Longhorns.

Texas did get off on the right foot with this win over Houston Baptist, as the team will now turn their immediate focus to the Gonzaga game. There were some issues in the first half, but there will be some growing pains after the team dealt with so many changes during the offseason.

All in all, Texas hoops fans have to be happy with the way this game ended. Texas easily covered the spread and finished the game hot. Some of the new additions to the team looked good, as did the second unit. The production was pretty evenly distributed in this win for the Longhorns in the regular season opener.
