Texas Football: 5 overreactions from the unbelievable OT loss to Kansas
QB situation is downright confusing
Entering this meeting with Kansas, Sark and the Longhorns didn’t have a set-in-stone quarterback to roll with. Texas was planning to use both redshirt junior quarterback Casey Thompson and sophomore Hudson Card in this game after a rather poor showing for both in the embarrassing 23-point loss to the Iowa State Cyclones last weekend.
Yet, it became clear by the end of this game that Texas was best off using Thompson as the quarterback. He finished up this game with more than 350 passing yards, a whopping six passing touchdowns, and one pick.
The one player that is really suffering for the Longhorns that is still having a huge season is the breakthrough freshman wide receiver Xavier Worthy. At this point, it feels like Worthy is the only one that isn’t really injured and is trying on a consistent basis. Worthy led the way for the Longhorns in this game with more than 150 receiving yards and three touchdown catches.
It was also insane to see the reliance that Texas had on Worthy in this game. Worthy had a whopping 23 targets in this game, 14 of which resulted in catches. With Joshua Moore in the NCAA Transfer Portal and redshirt sophomore Jordan Whittington still out due to injury, Worthy is about all that the Longhorns have in terms of proven wide receiver depth.
All in all, this was a good outing for Thompson in the second half. But he some saw bad turnovers happen on his watch in this game that would cost the Longhorns in the end. It was also not great to see the lack of ability for Thompson to diagnose blitzing plays for the Jayhawks at the line of scrimmage. He had a career-low quarterback grade when blitzed this season. He was blitzed on 13 dropbacks, with only four resulting in pressures. That’s tough to digest.
