Texas Basketball: 3 key players that must improve after loss to Gonzaga
Courtney Ramey, G
One player that I thought the Longhorns could count on for some decent production in the eventual loss to the Zags was the former blue-chip recruit and senior guard Courtney Ramey. But Ramey actually came through with one of the least efficient performances through and through for Texas in this game.
A common theme between the three big-time Longhorns players on this list is the fact that this trio got off to a solid start against the easier opposition of Houston Baptist in the season opener compared to Gonzaga over the weekend.
In the loss to the Zags, Ramey was also rather silent in the offensive end. He registered just six points, three rebounds, two assists, no steals, no blocks, and two turnovers. And he shot a poor 2-of-8 from the field, 0-of-1 from beyond the arc, and 2-of-2 from the free-throw line.
One of the lone positives from this game was the fact that Ramey got to the charity stripe for two attempts and drained them both. He did play better perimeter defense in the second half, but it was too little too late at that point.
Ramey is a streaker player, though. And with key new additions to the Texas backcourt unit from the offseason such as sophomore guard Devin Askew and Carr, Ramey’s touches are going to decrease this season. The hope is that he can use some of the additional space and improved supporting cast to find a more efficient scoring touch on a permanent basis.
