A potential development to watch concerning the 2022 Texas football recruiting class is a process that began back when the TCU Horned Frogs parted ways with longtime head coach Gary Patterson earlier this fall. This is relevant to Texas since the 2022 class lost the commitment of four-star Memorial cornerback Jaylon Guilbeau roughly two months ago.

TCU essentially flipped the commitment of Guilbeau from the Longhorns back in late September, adding one of their-highest rated prospects in their 2022 class to the mix. Guilbeau had a strong connection with the TCU coaching staff, but the potential turnover in Fort Worth could impact the status of his commitment, Horns247 reports this week (paid content).

Texas is reportedly back in contact with Guilbeau on a consistent basis as it appears that he is now exploring other options available to him. The decision-making process here for Guilbeau could come down to who TCU hires to replace Patterson as their next head coach.

A lot could also hinge on if the next TCU head coach retains cornerbacks coach Jeremy Modkins heading into next offseason. TCU was largely able to flip the commitment of Guilbeau from Texas thanks to the relationship he had formed with Modkins and fellow Horned Frogs assistant Paul Gonzales.

Texas would likely be one of the first schools that Guilbeau would consider if he’s not too happy with the hire that TCU makes to replace Patterson in the end. And if TCU is still without a hire by the time the Early Signing Period arrives, this could be an interesting narrative that unfolds with Guilbeau. That uncertainty could also lead him to further consider other options before he signs somewhere.

At one point in time, Guilbeau was by far the highest-rated cornerback commit in the Longhorns 2022 class. And his de-commitment led to Texas pursuing three-star Louisiana cornerback Ronald Lewis in the 2022 class.

Not only is Guilbeau currently the highest-rated commit in the Frogs 2022 class, but he is also the lone blue-chip prospect in the mix. Adding him back to the Longhorns 2022 class would be huge for new head coach Steve Sarkisian and cornerbacks coach Terry Joseph.
