At this point of the cycle, it feels like the most actively discussed commit in the 2022 Texas football recruiting class in connection with another school is the four-star Lewisville wide receiver, Armani Winfield. As one of the initial commit in the 2022 class, Winfield is a big part of this group for Texas and new head coach Steve Sarkisian.

And if Sark, second-year wide receivers coach Andre Coleman, and the Longhorns eventually wind up missing out on the elite five-star Frisco-Liberty wideout Evan Stewart, keeping Winfield’s commitment is going to become paramount. But that task looks like it will be increasingly difficult roughly one month ahead of the start of the Early Signing Period.

According to a report from Horns247 (paid content) this week, Winfield is still in contact with the Michigan State Spartans and head coach Mel Tucker on a regular basis this fall. It sounds like Texas and Michigan State are the two schools in communication with Winfield, and both likely do so on a daily basis.

The feeling that Longhorns fans should be getting with Winfield is that this could be nearly a split decision for him ahead of the Early Signing Period. But considering the expectation is for Winfield to sign next month and enroll early (likely at either Michigan State or Texas), we should know his final intentions very soon.

Winfield had multiple visits with both Michigan State and Texas since the summer. And it looks like multiple coach visits have taken place too between both schools with Winfield.

The official visits that Winfield took with each school came back in June.

All in all, this is a recruitment that Sark, Coleman, and the Longhorns need to lock down on soon to seal the deal with Winfield. It would obviously be a big detriment to the 2022 class to lose another key blue-chip skill position commit.

Texas is fighting a tough battle on the field and on the recruiting trail right now. Keeping the commitment of Winfield around is a big looming task as is snapping the five-game losing streak the Longhorns currently sit on.
