If it were up to me to diagnose one of the potential bigger issues that arose for the Longhorns this fall, it would be the lack of leadership in the locker room among the players. Texas didn’t have true captains entering the season that stuck week-to-week. Sark and his staff elected to have captains picked on a weekly basis, which isn’t the usual way of doing things in this regard.

I do believe that the lack of consistent leadership on both sides of the ball this fall has led to issues late in games when Texas has usually struggled. This is where having guys back on the defensive side of the ball like Cook, Jamison, Thompson, and/or senior linebacker DeMarvion Overshown back in 2022.

Overshown has really had some unfortunate things happen this fall, namely injury issues, that have held him back. At the outset of the regular season, the Longhorns were struggling to get decent pushes along the defensive line. Given the reliance that is placed on Overshown’s shoulders when the defensive line isn’t getting an effective push at the line of scrimmage, that impacted his production in the first few weeks of the season.

And once Overshown did get to play behind a more effective defensive line in the early phases of the Big 12 slate, injuries started to kick in. Overshown also wasn’t the beneficiary of someone who forced a lot of turnovers this fall, at least compared to the seasons prior.

You just don’t turn away a talented and proven player on a struggling defense like Overshown if he does want to return in 2022. He should definitely be someone that the defensive coaching staff is very willing to welcome back next year.
