At this moment in time, there’s a number of different scenarios that could play out for new head coach Steve Sarkisian in the 2023 Texas football recruiting class. Texas only has one commit in the 2023 class at the moment, which is the touted four-star Arlington-Seguin defensive back, Jamel Johnson. At one point, Texas did hold a commitment from five-star El Campo running back Rueben Owens.

And it still looks like there’s a good chance that the Longhorns will eventually get the commitment of Owens back. But for the time being, the Longhorns are still seeking out their first five-star commit that sticks in the 2023 class.

Among the highest-rated targets of the Longhorns 2023 class, that has a Texas offer, is the elite five-star Allen defensive lineman David Hicks. Texas recently hosted Hicks on an unofficial visit last weekend for the meeting with the Kansas Jayhawks.

Texas football could reportedly fall behind the leaders for 5-Star 2023 DL David Hicks

That doesn’t seem like the best timing for Texas to host Hicks for a visit during a game weekend. But that could be said for really any visitors, official or unofficial, that was in attendance for a game during this five-game losing skid this fall.

This was one of the first notable visits that Hicks had with the Longhorns. And while it looks like Hicks is certainly interested in Texas, it doesn’t look to be as much as he has with the likes of the Texas A&M Aggies, Clemson Tigers, and the LSU Tigers. Texas along with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Florida Gators look to be fading out of the picture with Hicks this fall.

An update on how the Longhorns are doing with some of their top five-star targets in the 2023 class this week from Horns247 indicates that Texas could fall behind the top two or three schools with Hicks soon. This Horns247 piece mentions that this recruitment is heading to a point where Texas A&M and Clemson emerge as the top two schools with Hicks.

To say that Texas is out of this recruitment would be just downright wrong. New defensive line coach Bo Davis is one of the top, and most established, recruiters on this staff. Texas could work its way into his top two or three schools with some improved results on the field and a change in momentum on the recruiting trail with Hicks by next offseason.

Hicks is not only one of the top-ranked targets of the Longhorns 2023 class, but he’s also one of the highest-rated in the entire country for that cycle. He ranks as the nation’s No. 4 2023 high school prospect, No. 2 defensive lineman, and the top overall prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite).
