The biggest recent news on the college football coaching carousel is something that could have an impact on the recruiting trail for the Texas football program. With the Florida Gators parting ways with fourth-year head coach Dan Mullen this weekend, there is yet another enormous head coaching vacancy around the college football landscape.

There are a few key Gators’ commits in their 2022 and 2023 recruiting classes that the Longhorns have sent offers out to. A host of them are also ones that the Longhorns should now target after the firing of Mullen this weekend.

It’s rare that you will see as many head coaching vacancies in the middle of a college football season as there is this fall. Part of that is likely due to the fact that there were some head coaches on hot seats last year that were given another season due to the COVID-19 pandemic and all of the change that invoked.

Who Texas football should try to flip after the firing of Dan Mullen at Florida?

Two head coaches that really fit into that bucket are the now-former USC Trojans bench boss Clay Helton and Ed Orgeron with the LSU Tigers. Florida joins a group of schools that also includes USC, LSU, and the Washington Huskies that have extremely high-profile head coaching vacancies in the midst of the 2021 season.

With that in mind, which of the current (and potential soon-to-be) Gators’ commits are worth going after for first-year head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns in the weeks and months ahead? Here’s a look at three to watch.
