3 Florida commits Texas should flip after firing of Dan Mullen
Mac Markway, TE
Another current Florida commit on this list that the Longhorns have a coach on their staff that was one of the top recruiters after him is the highly-touted four-star DeSmet (MO) tight end Mac Markway. First-year Texas special teams coordinator/tight ends coach Jeff Banks was one of the top recruiters after Markway when Alabama offered him in spring 2020.
Banks is definitely one of the top recruiters on Texas’ staff and could be an ace in the hole if Sark wants to revive the contact between him and Markway in the near future. Texas has yet to land a blue-chip tight end commit in the 2022 and/or 2023 recruiting class. You actually have to go all the way back to the Longhorns 2019 signing class to find the last blue-chip tight end commit (which was the Arizona native Brayden Liebrock).
It is also worth noting that the Longhorns already have an offer sent out to Markway.
What could work in Texas’ favor in the recruitment of someone like Markway is the fact that he’s part of the 2023 recruiting cycle. Texas could take its time to evaluate Markway and his fit with the offensive scheme that Sark is trying to build out. But if one thing is true, it’s that Sark and the Longhorns need an upgrade at the tight end position in terms of blocking and receiving.
Markway is currently one of the highest-rated commits in Florida’s 2023 class. And it would be worth considering for the Longhorns to look his way to try and flip to their 2023 class in the not-too-distant future. Texas would be able to start building out a solid foundation for the 2023 class on the offensive side of the ball if they land a commitment from someone like Markway.
