Starting QB next season won’t be Casey Thompson or Hudson Card

Let’s be honest, at this point of the season most negative takes on the Longhorns aren’t going to be much of an overreaction. While it is very true that Longhorns fans just have to be patient with Sark and this coaching staff at this point to right the ship, that doesn’t mean that what is happening now is good.

A lot of the issues that Texas had during this six-game losing streak stems back to the inconsistencies along the offensive line and at the quarterback position. Outside of the play of standout freshman wide receiver Xavier Worthy, there isn’t much of anything positive to say about the receiving corps either throughout Big 12 play.

The issues that Texas has at the quarterback position were on full display in this loss to West Virginia on Nov. 20. Sark once again couldn’t find the solution behind center, as sophomore Hudson Card and redshirt junior Casey Thompson both got a large number of reps at quarterback in this game. Card did get injured at one point, in all fairness, so that placed Thompson back in late in the game.

The thought heading into the West Virginia game was that Thompson might’ve regained some of his mojo in a six-touchdown performance in the overtime loss to the Jayhawks last weekend. All that Thompson could muster in this game, though, was four completions on 14 passing attempts, for under 30 passing yards, no passing touchdowns, and one interception.

Card was better than Thompson in this game, but he still wasn’t much of a difference-maker.

If one thing is clear at this point of the season, it’s that the quarterback competition is going to be wide open next offseason. And if there are some appealing names that show up at the quarterback position in the NCAA Transfer Portal, or a commit in the 2022 signing class shows out, it will be difficult to see either Card or Thompson as the starter next fall.
