3 Texas players that are clearly not a good fit with Steve Sarkisian
Jared Wiley, TE
Another position group where it’s clear that Sark and the Longhorns need to improve next offseason is at tight end. And there is likely to be some pretty major roster turnover on the way for the Longhorns at this position come next offseason.
Texas is set to see super-senior tight end Cade Brewer run out of eligibility following this season. But the Longhorns are likely going to get back the former three-star recruit and junior tight end Jared Wiley back in 2022.
The sizable 6-foot-7 and 255-pound tight end Wiley didn’t make much of a positive impact in the blocking or receiving game this fall. While he does have a career-high two touchdown catches this year, he only has seven catches for 43 receiving yards otherwise.
Not to mention the fact that Wiley ranked near the bottom among Big 12 tight ends that took at least 115 snaps on run-blocking plays this fall in terms of grade. He wasn’t much better in pass blocking either. Brewer was the higher-graded blocking tight end between him and Wiley so far this fall.
To make matters worse, Wiley was the lowest-graded eligible tight end in the Big 12 in pass blocking so far this season.
It just became clear that Wiley wasn’t a huge part of this offense as the season moved along. He was targeted just 10 times this fall, coming up with two drops in the process.
Texas likely won’t involve the tight end position too often in route running ever under Sark’s direction as the head coach. But Texas still needs a reliable option at tight end that is versatile enough to at least be a tight end that grades out in the top half of the Big 12 in blocking and receiving.
