When you look at some of the numbers this fall from wide receivers that aren’t the former four-star Michigan Wolverines commit and freshman breakthrough Xavier Worthy, things get pretty rough for the Longhorns. This was one of the worst cohesive seasons in recent memory for Texas at the wide receiver position. It almost makes it worse that Texas had the rise to stardom of someone like Worthy while the rest of the receiving corps was so challenged.

One particular Longhorns’ wide receiver that had an extremely inconsistent time this season (at least so far) is the former four-star recruit and junior Marcus Washington. After redshirt sophomore wide receiver Jordan Whittington went down with a pretty long-term injury in the loss the Oklahoma Sooners in the Red River Rivalry game, and redshirt junior Joshua Moore put his name in the transfer portal, it looked like it was Washington’s time to shine.

Washington did anything but shine since the injury to Whittington and the departure of Moore. He has two drops in the last three weeks, has only caught one of five contested balls thrown his way, and hasn’t held up well in the blocking game.

So far this season, Washignton ranks at or near the bottom on the team in yards after the catch per reception, receiving grade, missed tackles forced, and contested catch rate.

Just like I mentioned in relation to Jones, I’m not saying that if Washington wants to return that the Longhorns coaching staff is going to turn him away. But it’s really difficult to see him earning any sort of significant role on the two-deep next year.

The last four or five weeks was really the time for Washington to prove his value to the coaching staff. He mostly failed to do so. There were some flashes for Washington, but it’s hard for anything but one of the worst drops of the season to live on in relation to him in the minds of Longhorns fans. It’s hard to see how Washington dropped that pass in the loss to West Virginia last weekend. But mistakes do happen.
