There might not be a single bigger event that took place on the recruiting trail at any point during the tenure of former Texas football head coach Tom Herman than losing the commitment of the elite five-star quarterback and Southlake Carroll product Quinn Ewers. Last fall, Texas saw Ewers de-commit from their 2022 recruiting class just to give his pledge to head coach Ryan Day and the Ohio State Buckeyes a short time later.

But the Longhorns are now under the direction of a different coaching staff led by first-year head coach Steve Sarkisian. Texas turned the page from all of the drama surrounding the Ewers saga last fall by parting ways with Herman back in January 2021.

It appears that Sark and the Longhorns actually had a decent connection building through their communication in spring last offseason. But it didn’t take long for Ewers to shut his recruitment down last offseason, thus ending any type of pursuit that the Longhorns had before he reclassified and enrolled this fall at Ohio State.

Yet, there is a new rumor that is coming about that Ewers could put his name in the NCAA Transfer Portal heading into next offseason to at least explore his options outside of Columbus. According to a 247Sports report earlier this month (paid content), the Ewers transfer rumor does “have legs to it” at this point.

Texas football could reportedly be involved in the pursuit of QB Quinn Ewers if he transfers from Ohio State

The main reason why Ewers could land in the transfer portal heading into next offseason is the fact that sophomore Heisman contender and star Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud has likely taken hold of the starting job for a good while. Stroud has almost asserted himself as the Heisman favorite this season with his play in the last few weeks.

Ewers likely wants to challenge for more immediate playing time if he can help it. And the Longhorns would offer him a situation where he could challenge for the starting job immediately. Since it is clear that Sark and the Longhorns aren’t settled with the quarterback situation right now between the likes of sophomore Hudson Card and redshirt junior Casey Thompson, Ewers might find it appealing to consider Texas as an option for his next landing spot if he does put his name in the portal.

Texas does also hold a commitment from the touted four-star Junipero Serra quarterback Maalik Murphy in the 2022 recruiting class. There is also a shot that Texas could flip the commitment of four-star Corner Canyon (UT) quarterback Devin Brown from the USC Trojans to their 2022 class. Adding Ewers to the mix hypothetically would really juice up the Longhorns’ quarterback room next year.
