4 Texas players that are great fits with Steve Sarkisian
Xavier Worthy, WR
Without a doubt, the best offensive player remaining at this point of the season for Sark and the Longhorns is the breakthrough stud freshman wide receiver Xavier Worthy. The wirey and elusive 6-foot-1 and 165-pound wideout is one of the most productive at his position in the Big 12 this season.
Through 11 games played this season, Worthy has a team-leading 57 catches for 933 receiving yards (16.4 yards per catch) and a dozen touchdown catches. Worthy is leading the Big 12 in receiving yards and receiving touchdowns. He also ranks in the top five in receptions, total touchdowns, and yards per reception.
It really is unreal the number of targets that have gone Worthy’s way in the last two weeks. And it proves how important he is to Sark’s offensive system moving forward. Worthy got 23 targets in the passing game in the loss to the Kansas Jayhawks two weeks ago. And he got another dozen targets in the passing game in last weekend’s loss to West Virginia.
And it tends to be that good things happen when Texas looks Worthy’s way early and often. In the last two weeks, he’s registered 237 receiving yards and a whopping four touchdown catches.
Texas also uses Worthy all over the field. Just getting him the ball in space is important. He’s got nearly 500 yards after the catch, 35 first downs, and 15 missed tackles forced so far this season. Considering the fact that he’s got an average depth of target of nearly 14 yards while still lining up out of the slot on 30 percent of his snaps in the passing game shows just how many different ways Sark can utilize Worthy.
