3 takeaways from Texas’ bounce-back win over Kansas State
Casey Thompson isn’t going to be the set in stone starting QB in 2022
While this is now the most obvious takeaway on this list, it is one worth mentioning as Sark and the Longhorns close out the regular season with a win over Kansas State. Redshirt junior quarterback Casey Thompson was the starter for the Longhorns in this game with sophomore Hudson Card out due to a lower-body injury.
It was important for Thompson to come up with a solid performance in this game. And it was about equally as important for him to stay healthy considering his backup at this point is a former walk-on in Ben Ballard.
This wasn’t the best game of the season for Thompson, though. He certainly had some nice throws that were difference-makers at different points, but he had some really bad throws too. The lone interception in this game was a drastically underthrown deep ball by Thompson in the first quarter.
Although, Thompson did finish up this game with 170 passing yards, one passing touchdown, one interception, two turnover-worthy plays, and nine first downs. He was sacked just once, good for a pressure-to-sack rate of 12.5 percent. That was a nice improvement compared to the last six or seven games for the offensive line.
While this was a good enough performance from Thompson for the Longhorns to get a win over a shorthanded Kansas State team, it still likely wasn’t enough to force Sark to change his mind about the quarterback situation heading into the offseason. The way that Sark talks about the quarterbacks it seems like he’s ready to completely open up the competition next spring.
