Answer at QB for 2022 is in the transfer portal

I do want to give some props to redshirt junior quarterback Casey Thompson for his place and resilience in this win over Kansas State. No other Longhorns players had as much of a roller coaster ride this season in the spotlight as the duo of quarterbacks in Thompson and sophomore Hudson Card.

But this win over Kansas State did prove that there are some inconsistencies for Thompson that just might be too difficult for Sark and his staff to work through over the long haul. Thompson had two turnover-worthy plays, one of which resulted in a pick on an underthrown deep ball in the first quarter. He also had a couple of other missed reads and missed throws that were potentially costly in this game.

This is a repetitive narrative in Thompson’s game this fall to see an underwhelming performance after a really impressive win throughout the Big 12 slate. In three games this season, Thompson registered at least five passing touchdowns. He was special in those outings but really came out flat the following week after each of those five-plus touchdown performances.

In the three games that followed his outings of five-plus passing touchdowns, Thompson combined to register 31 completions on 63 passing attempts (49.2 completion percentage), 350 passing yards, two passing touchdowns, and four picks. Those were also three of the four games with his lowest passer efficiency rating of the entire season.

And the tone for which Sark has talked about the quarterback situation ahead of next offseason in the last few weeks goes to show that he’s likely ready to make a change in the winter.

It will be incredibly noteworthy to see which route Sark wants to take to build out his quarterback room next offseason, though. He really has two options from what we’ve seen in the last couple of months. The first is to hit the NCAA Transfer Portal if there is a worthy candidate that is a perfect fit or could contribute in a big way immediately.

And the second route that Sark could take is to open up the competition to any potential incoming freshmen, like four-star Junipero Serra product Maalik Murphy and four-star Corner Canyon product Devin Brown. That is if Texas is able to ultimately land the commitment of Brown.
