After losing the commitment of the elite five-star Frisco-Liberty wide receiver Evan Stewart to the Texas A&M Aggies early this week, there is a major uphill battle ahead for the 2022 Texas football recruiting class. Texas once held the commitment of Stewart in their 2022 class, but that fell apart pretty fast.

Stewart was only committed to the Longhorns for around one month until he re-opened his recruitment back early in the offseason. But the hope was that new head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns were going to reel in the commitment of Stewart back ahead of the Early Signing Period. That’s definitely not what happened this week.

And the Longhorns are now trying to find the contingency plan in place to deal with missing out on Stewart. Texas missing out on Stewart does mean that Texas is likely going to have to take a major step down in terms of recruiting ranking with who they target next.

It also doesn’t help that the Longhorns lost out on the commitment of four-star Lewisville wide receiver Armani Winfield during their regular season finale win on Black Friday over the Kansas State Wildcats. That also wasn’t a good look on the part of Winfield or Texas to lose that commitment in the middle of an actual regular season game.

Losing out on Stewart means that Texas had to turn elsewhere and offer someone like the former SMU Mustangs commit and three-star Grand Prairie wide receiver Savion Red. Texas extended a scholarship offer to Red this week after losing the commitment of Stewart, likely as a contingency plan.

But a report from Inside Texas (part of the On3 Network, paid content) indicates that Texas will get an official visit from Red on Dec. 3. This pursuit of moving fast between Texas and Red at this point.

Texas is also putting their ace recruiter in theory to pursue Red, which shows a lot about how this contingency plan is forming together. Texas put first-year special teams coordinator/tight ends coach Jeff Banks as the top recruiter after Red after he was in the same position with Stewart.

After getting his Texas offer this week, Red now has just a few schools on his offer sheet at this point. Red now has offers from the likes of the Kansas Jayhawks, Texas, and SMU. We’ll see if there is a plan in place for Red, but this is tough news after losing out on Stewart.

Texas is still sitting at 20 commits in the 2022 class after missing out on Stewart. The official visit from Red this week could get one of the wide receiver spots filled in the 2022 class too after losing the commitment of Winfield a few days ago.
