All of a sudden, a key piece of the 2022 Texas football recruiting class could fall into the lap of new head coach Steve Sarkisian and their staff. Texas could wind up essentially flipping the commitment from the former Oklahoma Sooners pledge and four-star Lubbock-Cooper linebacker Kobie McKinzie after all of the turmoil in Norman of late.

After the shocking news that came about last weekend with the now-former Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley leaving Norman to become the next head coach with the USC Trojans, it didn’t take long for a de-commitment from McKinzie to come down. McKinzie officially de-committed from the Sooners on Nov. 28, the same day that the news broke about Riley leaving for USC.

The fact that so much of the Oklahoma coaching staff also followed Riley to USC made it easier for Texas to capitalize on this situation. Texas jumped on McKinzie with a Nov. 30 offer. And there are already some leading indicators that things are moving firmly in the right direction with the blue-chip in-state product.

There are already two expert 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions put in favor of Texas on the same day that he received his offer from the school. And the Rivals FutureCast already has four experts and publishers picking the commitment of McKinzie to land with Texas after the offer came his way this week.

It is hard to understate the importance of Texas being able to essentially flip the commitment of McKinzie from the Sooners. While it might mean a bit more if McKinzie had flipped while the Sooners’ coaching staff was still in place, Texas will take help at the linebacker position any way they can get it.

McKinzie was one of the earliest pieces of the Sooners’ 2022 class. He was committed to Oklahoma since January 2020. But it took what seemed like only a few minutes over the weekend for McKinzie to de-commit from Oklahoma after the Riley news.

If Texas is able to eventually reel in a commitment from McKinzie, he would be the highest-rated linebacker commit by a good margin in the 2022 class. He ranks as the nation’s No. 120 2022 high school prospect, No. 11 linebacker, and No. 21 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite).
