A topic of frequent speculation already for new head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas football program is the NCAA Transfer Portal. With skill position talent already loading up in the transfer portal entering the offseason, Texas’ coaching staff needs to be doing their homework now on which targets they can go out and get a commitment from in the weeks and months ahead.

The advantage (as depressing as it sounds) to Sark and the Longhorns missing out on postseason eligibility this fall is the fact that the staff has more time to scout out potential targets in the transfer portal and on the recruiting trail. Texas is just a couple of weeks out from the start of the Early Signing Period, and there is already a big first wave of entrants to the transfer portal.

Texas football could find the transfer portal fruitful this offseason

It’s pretty clear by now that Sark and the Longhorns aren’t going to make that many offers, if any, out of the transfer portal until after at least the first day of the Early Signing Period (in roughly two weeks). But Texas needs to be scouting out their grand prize targets in the transfer portal still at this point in time.

Texas still is going to need to likely add at least eight or 10 guys out of the portal to be comfortable heading into fall camp in 2022. The 2022 recruiting class is starting to take its final shape and it shows that the Longhorns will still have a busy offseason ahead in the transfer portal.

Here’s a look into four stars that Sark and the Longhorns should already be on in the transfer portal in the earliest stages of the offseason.
