Texas working to get 5-Star WR Kevin Coleman for an OV next week
What could be really big news for new head coach Steve Sarkisian, second-year wide receivers coach Andre Coleman, and the 2022 Texas football recruiting class could now be on the way in the next couple of days. There are indicators that show the elite five-star St. Mary’s wide receiver Kevin Coleman could be getting on the books for an official visit with Texas on the weekend of Dec. 10.
A prospect that has come and gone as a key target in the Longhorns 2022 class in the last six or eight months is starting to return to the forefront just a couple of weeks ahead of the Early Signing Period. With one official visit remaining that Coleman could take ahead of the Early Signing Period, it sounds like Texas and the USC Trojans on the considerations here.
A report from 247Sports on Dec. 1 (paid content) indicates that Texas and USC are the two favorites to get an official visit from Coleman next weekend. But the way this narrative is trending right now appears to favor the Longhorns over the Trojans.
Texas football still on the board among 5-Star WR Kevin Coleman’s top schools
Coleman did visit USC last month but could take another since the coaching change just occurred
Another nugget of note for Coleman in what could be the final weeks of his recruitment before he makes his decision is that one of his top schools could be fading due to coaching staff turnover on the horizon. One of the top schools for Coleman in the last few months was the Oregon Ducks. But one of his primary recruiters, offensive coordinator Joe Moorehead, now looks to be headed elsewhere.
Moorehead is reportedly (per Akron Beacon Journal) going to be the next head coach of the Akron Zips, which looks to hurt the Ducks in the recruitment of Coleman. That should help out the likes of Texas and USC with Coleman if nothing else.
The top recruiters that Texas has after Coleman are Andre Coleman and new special teams coordinator/tight ends coach Jeff Banks. If Andre Coleman is able to win over the commitment of Kevin, it would go a long way to a much-needed image boost on the recruiting trail.
Texas has largely struggled to recruit at the wide receiver position more so than any other group in the 2021 and 2022 classes (barring Xavier Worthy). And that reflects poorly on Andre Coleman. But move in a direction to land a commitment from Kevin Coleman, and Andre should be in a much better spot heading into the offseason.
Kevin Coleman is definitely one of the best wide receiver prospects left on the board for the Longhorns after missing out on five-star Frisco-Liberty wideout Evan Stewart to the Texas A&M Aggies this week. He ranks as the nation’s No. 33 2022 high school prospect, No. 3 wide receiver, and the top overall prospect out of Missouri (247Sports Composite).
