Max Johnson

Maybe the most realistic option for the Longhorns, if they’re looking in the transfer portal for a Ewers contingency, is the former LSU Tigers breakthrough sophomore quarterback Max Johnson. Despite the up and down regular season that the Tigers faced in the final year under head coach Ed Orgeron, Johnson still had a pretty good run.

The 6-foot-5 and 215-pound Johnson had a solid run this fall with 27 passing touchdowns and just six picks. That went along with more than 2,800 passing yards, a completion percentage just north of 60, 8.3 adjusted yards per passing attempt, and a 144.4 passer efficiency rating.

There were some impressive performances that Johnson put together against at least decent, if not solid, defenses this fall. That list included 331 passing yards and three scores against the UCLA Bruins, 280 passing yards and four scores against the Mississippi State Bulldogs, and 306 passing yards and three passing scores against the Texas A&M Aggies.

Johnson should be one of the better quarterbacks in the transfer portal throughout the offseason. But it wouldn’t make too much sense to bring him in unless Ewers chooses to take his talents elsewhere.

If Ewers were not in the transfer portal early this offseason, I would completely advocate for the Longhorns to go after Johnson. He’s an immediate impact quarterback that already has success playing against top competition with top skill position players on his team. But Johnson should be held as more of a contingency than a second quarterback to take along with Ewers.
