It’s difficult to gloss over the fact that there is something brewing for head coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff in the 2022 Texas football recruiting class less than a week ahead of the Early Signing Period. Texas is heading into the Early Signing Period with the potential to get a top five-ranked class in the nation if they close on some of their top blue-chip prospects.

And the most important position group of emphasis for the Longhorns 2022 class ahead of the Early Signing Period is along the offensive line. Texas currently has two offensive linemen committed in the 2022 class, and more could be to come soon.

Yet, it appears that Sark and first-year Texas offensive line coach/offensive coordinator Kyle Flood are pushing for more than just the targets on their board initially heading into the month of December. Texas is now going after an LSU Tigers commit and four-star Catholic-Baton Rouge offensive tackle Emery Jones.

It looks like Texas is looking for the opportunity to flip Jones in the wake of some of the coaching staff turnover at LSU heading into the offseason. The problem with that is the fact that LSU offensive line coach Brad Davis looks to stay in place despite the change in head coaches in Baton Rouge this fall.

LSU parted ways with the one-time National Champion and now-former head coach Ed Orgeron for the former Notre Dame Fighting Irish longtime head coach Brian Kelly. But if Kelly keeps most of his positional coaches on staff heading into the offseason, then it will make this pursuit of Jones tougher for Flood and the Longhorns.

According to a report from 247Sports (paid content), Texas is one of three schools that are still pushing for Jones. The other two programs are the Arkansas Razorbacks and Tennessee Volunteers.

Texas does look to have something in place to work off of with Jones, though. Texas is reportedly looking to get an official visit on the books with Jones. Since Jones is looking to draw out his recruitment until February, ahead of National Signing Day, Texas could have a shot to get their foot in the door with him now.

But this report from 247Sports also mentions that Jones is still saying that LSU is his top school.

This is one that Texas would have to probably put some real work into. But Texas has a severe need to add some talent and depth in the trenches this coming offseason. Pursuing as many offensive linemen as possible definitely isn’t the worst strategy to take on with this class.

With the Early Signing Period set to begin on Dec. 15, it looks like Jones is going to be a name to watch past that point in time, and up until National Signing Day. For now, it looks like the top names along the offensive line for Texas heading into the Early Signing Period are five stars Devon Campbell and Kelvin Banks.
