Texas loses senior S B.J. Foster to the transfer portal
Maybe some of the biggest names to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal out of the Texas football program heading into the offseason yet came about late this week. Texas saw the likes of senior safety B.J. Foster and junior safety Chris Adimora put their names in the transfer portal on Dec. Multiple reports (including one from Horns247 on Dec. 10) confirmed that Foster and Adimora entered the transfer portal entering the weekend.
Head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns promised a lot of roster turnover entering the offseason essentially as the disappointing 2021 campaign moved along. And losing the likes of Adimora and Foster isn’t all that surprising given the way the season turned for them later this fall.
Adimora saw his snaps take a big hit this season compared to last. He went from getting more than 500 defensive snaps and showing some real signs of progress at points, last fall to getting just over 100 defensive snaps in 2021. New Texas co-defensive coordinators/linebackers coaches Jeff Choate and Pete Kwiatkowski didn’t find much of a good fit with their scheme this fall.
In just under eight games played in the season that was, Adimora registered 10 combined tackles, 0.5 tackles for loss, 0.5 sacks, and two pass breakups. But he was also one of the lowest-graded defensive backs for Texas in 2021.

Meanwhile, Foster showed some real flashes over the course of the last three seasons. But there was never consistent traction for Foster either with this new coaching staff. Foster even struggled with a number of inconsistencies in the latter days under former Texas head coach Tom Herman.
Foster did lead the team with three picks this season. He also registered 46 combined tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, no sacks, and two pass breakups.
The interesting thing about Foster this season was how impressive he was at times this fall, and how it looked like he apparently gave up on the field in pursuit of the ball carrier at others. Foster has consistently ranked among the defensive backs with the most missed tackles, and one of the highest missed tackle rates, in the last three seasons for the Longhorns.
There’s no clear destination as it appears yet out of the transfer portal for either Foster or Adimora. But the Longhorns do now have some depth in the defensive backfield to restore heading into the 2022 offseason.
Texas was anticipated to lose some defensive backs this offseason such as Foster and Adimora. It was no guarantee what would happen with these two safeties, but it’s not really jarring that the Longhorns saw these two names show up in the portal heading into the weekend.
