It is really weird how coaches formerly associated with the Texas football program can see their stories come full circle in the NFL. That is the case right now with former Texas head coach Charlie Strong and former Ohio State Buckeyes and Florida Gators head coach Urban Meyer with the Jacksonville Jaguars this year.

There was also a point in time where the Longhorns were going after the three-time National Champion and current Jags head coach Meyer to fill the same role to replace the former Texas head coach Tom Herman. That was a saga that was ongoing throughout much of last fall.

But it sounded like Meyer (who was a Fox College Football analyst at the time) wasn’t too interested in returning to the college football head coaching ranks. He had retired from coaching a few years back, ending his run with Ohio State. Yet, he returned to football coaching this year with the Jags.

What is also interesting to note is the fact that Meyer brought a number of former Texas coaches on staff with him in Jacksonville. Strong and former Texas defensive coordinator/safeties coach Chris Ash are both on staff with the Jags under Meyer this year.

Former Texas football head coach Charlie Strong reportedly a candidate to replace Urban Meyer?

It isn’t working out too smoothly thus far with Meyer and the Jags. Distraction after distraction coming off-the-field has added to the problems for Meyer during his first season as the Jags head coach.

On the field, Meyer has led the Jags to a record of 2-10 so far this season. Despite the addition of the former Clemson Tigers star quarterback Trevor Lawrence, the Jags are still one of the worst teams in the NFL this season.

And there looks to be further turmoil off the field for Meyer and the Jags now. According to a report from Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports on Dec. 11, the Meyer is experiencing some friction in the locker room right now by way of players apparently turning against him.

With this news coming about that Meyer could be losing some of the locker room in Jacksonville, this report notes that Strong could be a potential replacement if there is a change at head coach looming for this team.

Texas has gone through two head coaches now since Strong was let go following the 2016 season. Herman was the Texas head coach for four years until he was let go last offseason. And now, we’re about to enter the second year under current Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian.
