The 2022 Texas football recruiting class is having a pretty insane morning in terms of flipping commitments from other programs to start off the first day of the Early Signing Period. Texas has already flipped the likes of the former Oklahoma Sooners commit and three-star Arlington-Seguin athlete Xavion Brice and former Michigan Wolverines commit/three-star Westlake edge rusher Ethan Burke.

Head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns added to the number of flips in the 2022 class on the morning of the first signing day by getting the highly touted former Ohio State Buckeyes commit and four-star Little Elm cornerback Terrance Brooks. A 247Sports report, among other sources, confirmed the flip of Brooks’ commitment from Ohio State to Texas on the morning of Dec. 15.

Texas looked to have some increasing momentum with Brooks on the recruiting trail by staying in contact with him right through the first signing day. This commitment flip is a great example of why Sark and this Texas coaching staff are seeing it through in terms of staying in contact with these top prospects on the recruiting trail until the signed National Letter of Intent officially comes through.

One of the most underrated positions of need in the Longhorns 2022 class at this point of the cycle was at cornerback. But Texas came through with two huge blue-chip cornerback commits in the last month or so. Texas has now got four-star Memorial cornerback Jaylon Guilbeau and the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex product Brooks in the 2022 class on the first signing day.

The 5-foot-11 and 190-pound corner Brooks is one of the best defensive back prospects out of Texas for this recruiting cycle. Landing him is huge for the Longhorns, especially if the elite five-star North Shore cornerback Denver Harris winds up signing with the Texas A&M Aggies over the Longhorns.

Brooks was one of the top cornerback targets on the board for the Longhorns 2022 class for the entire cycle. But seeing him commit to Ohio State back during the summer was a big hit for the Longhorns 2022 class.

Texas stuck with it, though, and managed to flip his commitment on the first signing day.

Texas is getting a cornerback with tremendous ball skills, good agility and speed, and quick hips, which shows the maturity in his game to play right away in college. Brooks is essentially the definition of an early impact defensive back as far as the Longhorns are concerned.

With Texas losing senior cornerback Josh Thompson to the NFL Draft and fellow senior D’Shawn Jamison having an inconsistent 2021 campaign, adding the likes of Guilbeau and Brooks is big. Texas clearly needed help in the secondary to start really being effective in coverage under co-defensive coordinators/linebackers coaches Pete Kwiatkowski and Jeff Choate.

The secondary really fell apart at times down the stretch in the season that was. Adding some potent blue-chip corners such as Guilbeau and Brooks in the 2022 class can start to help rectify that issue next year.

I do firmly believe that Brooks is the type of cornerback that can start right away for Texas if he shows out well in camp next year. He’s got all of the tools necessary to become one of the best cornerbacks in the Big 12, and possibly the SEC eventually (depending on when the move actually happens).

Brooks also brings the rare skill set to the table of insane length and athleticism along with the ability to excel while playing in man or zone coverage. He’s also a sure-tackler, which is something that Kwiatkowski and the Longhorns definitely need more of on the back end.

With three-star Warren Easton cornerback commit Ronald Lewis holding off on signing until February (around National Signing Day 2022), Texas now has two corners locked in with this class it appears.

Texas is now up to a whopping 26 commits in the 2022 class on the first signing day after landing the trio of flips in Brooks, Brice, and Burke. More could be to come on the first signing day as this should be a crazy one on the Forty Acres.
