SMU

The other rather obvious landing spot that Wiley could be interested in committing to out of the transfer portal this offseason is with the SMU Mustangs. Wiley would be able to stay close to home while getting a shot to play in a potent offense under new head coach and former Miami Hurricanes offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee.

It felt like Lashlee had one of the best relationships formed of any recruiter going after Wiley when he was coming out of high school during the 2019 cycle. Now that Lashlee is taking over the SMU program as their next head coach, this could be a really appealing landing spot potentially for Wiley.

SMU has some needs in the receiving corps and at tight end heading into the offseason. A multitude of de-commitments since former head coach Sonny Dykes left for the job opening with the TCU Horned Frogs earlier this year, SMU was left high and dry with a lot of their key targets in the 2022 class.

Lashlee is going to need to replace that depth from somewhere. And starting with a tight end that he is very familiar with such as Wiley could be a good place to turn.

SMU doesn’t have a single tight end commit/signee in their 2022 class, and there aren’t many prospects for them at the position in the transfer portal right now. Much like it does for Houston, it seems to make sense for all parties involved for the Mustangs to pursue Wiley in the transfer portal.
