While the Longhorns are certainly short on wide receiver depth right now, there are some players on the roster right now that likely aren’t competing for starting reps anytime soon. No matter how short Texas is on wideout depth right now, there is time for Sark and his offensive staff to find other answers at the position in the transfer portal.

Texas is also still seeking out help at the wide receiver position in the 2022 class ahead of National Signing Day, there are just not many key targets left on the board after the first signing period of this cycle.

Yet, this could still leave someone like the former three-star recruit and true freshman Texas wide receiver Casey Cain on the outside looking in as far as his spot on the depth chart is concerned with this group. The 6-foot-2 and 195-pound Louisana native didn’t take a single snap on offense or special teams for Texas in 2021.

Texas recruited Cain when Tom Herman was the head coach. His offensive system was better built to fit a skill set like that of Cain. He’s not the fastest or most elusive wide receiver, which means that he could not play at two of the wideout spots in most looks for Sark’s offense. He’s also lacking the size compared to someone like Troy Omeire to truly be a threat as an outside receiver.

It might be a while until Cain would challenge for significant reps at any spot on this offense. And considering the fact that he was recruited by the now-former Texas wide receivers coach Coleman, Cain might now have another reason to consider entering the transfer portal this offseason.
