One of the first names that come to mind in terms of potential transfer portal entrants for the Longhorns upon the departure of Coleman as the wide receivers coach is the former blue-chip recruit and junior wideout Marcus Washington.

There are two sides to the argument to consider when pondering whether Washington will enter the transfer portal this offseason. The first is the fact that he wasn’t even recruited by Coleman originally during his recruitment out of high school. Washington was originally recruited by former Texas wide receivers coach Drew Mehringer back during the 2019 cycle.

If Washington wasn’t recruited originally by Coleman, that connection might not be tight enough for him to now consider entering the transfer portal just because he’s gone.

On the other hand, since his recruitment out of high school, Washington has now seen Texas technically go through three wide receivers coaches. He might want to find a more stable landing spot where he can get a consistent shot to make an impact.

Washington did have a career year in terms of his production this fall with the Longhorns. He registered 18 catches for 277 receiving yards (15.4 yards per catch) and two receiving touchdowns. But it’s clear that he’s not one of the ideal starting wideouts for Texas moving forward.

I personally believe that the fate of Washington on the Forty Acres will come down to two factors. The first is who Texas hires as their next wide receivers coach. If Washington doesn’t believe he’s got good chemistry with the eventual hire here, he might go ahead and leave anyway.

And the second factor here that could impact Washington’s potential portal decision is what the depth looks like at wide receiver for this program in 2022. With how thin Texas is at wide receiver right now, the Longhorns might want to keep around Washington. If that changes, he might go.
