5 2022 early signees that can make an instant impact for Texas
Kelvin Banks, OT
The highest-rated commit/signee in the Longhorns 2022 class at the moment is also one that is likely going to challenge for starting reps right away along the offensive line next year. The elite five-star Summer Creek offensive tackle Kelvin Banks committed to and signed with, the Longhorns 2022 class last week. He is one of the linemen in the 2022 class that will help to potentially start fixing the offensive line woes for Flood and the Longhorns in the not-too-distant future.
This coveted 6-foot-5 and 300-pound in-state product is a former commit of the Oklahoma State Cowboys and Oregon Ducks. But he eventually found his way to the Forty Acres and will wind up staying home in the end.
Banks still has some progress to be made at the college level, but his ceiling is definitely high enough to make an immediate impact for the Texas offensive line. He’s got above-average athleticism and a large frame that helps him drive through multiple levels of opposing defenses.
His fundamentals and physical tools allow him to make himself known consistently in pass and run blocking. He is excellent at establishing the edge and reliably holding up the pocket in pass blocking. That will definitely be a welcome addition for the Texas offensive line as soon as next year.
I would be really surprised if Banks doesn’t compete for starting reps at one of the offensive tackle positions right away. With Texas losing the experienced and proven senior offensive tackle Derek Kerstetter to the NFL, both spots at the position should be open for competition next fall. Banks, freshman Andrej Karic, and three-star Duncanville offensive tackle commit Cameron Williams, could be some names to watch here to challenge for starting spots at OT.
