Most of the news surrounding the 2022 Texas football recruiting class at this point comes around one target for the coaching staff. That is the elite five-star Bowie interior offensive lineman Devon Campbell. But there is still one other noteworthy offensive line target of Texas’ 2022 class to talk about this point. And that is the touted four-star St. John Bosco interior offensive lineman Earnest Greene.

The sizable and talented 6-foot-5 and 330-pound California native Greene was definitely one of the top offensive line targets on the board for the Longhorns 2022 class throughout the last few months. It looked like Texas was fighting an uphill battle with Greene throughout the last couple of months, though.

Texas looked to be falling behind the Georgia Bulldogs, and even the Ohio State Buckeyes and Alabama Crimson Tide at one point. But offensive line coach/offensive coordinator Kyle Flood did make up some ground for Texas in the weeks leading up to the Early Signing Period. That put Texas in a position to be one of the top two schools it appeared along with Georgia.

Knowing that Greene appears to have already made his decision and signed his National Letter of Intent to either Georgia or Texas, it’s just a waiting game now until he announces publicly. He is set to do so at the Under-Armour All-American Game on Jan. 8, 2022.

Could Texas football pull off a shocker with 4-Star IOL Earnest Greene?

But Texas and Georgia fans are going to remain in the dark until that time.

Most of the leading indicators did point to Green favoring Georgia over Texas, though, in the days and weeks leading up to the first signing period.

Yet, there is a report from Horns247 (paid content) on Dec. 21 that notes that there is some talk that the decision between Texas and Georgia might be closer than some originally thought heading into the decision day for Greene last week. While the decision is likely already made by him, there is now some discussion indicating that Texas could’ve made it closer than we originally thought.

And since Texas was considered to be one of the top two schools when Greene made his decision last week, it’s not out of the question that they made a late run to get his commitment in the end.

I still personally think that Texas is not going to land a commitment from Greene when it’s all said and done. But I do buy into the fact that the decision between Texas and Georgia for Green could be closer than most people, including myself, assumed originally heading into the first signing period.

This is still worth noting, though, since Texas definitely generated some serious momentum along the offensive line heading into the first signing day last week. Texas now has three blue-chip commits/signees along the offensive line in the 2022 class ahead of National Signing Day, highlighted by the elite five-star Summer Creek offensive tackle Kelvin Banks.
