The recent addition of the former Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets running backs coach Tashard Choice in the same position on the Texas football coaching staff early this offseason is a big move for head coach Steve Sarkisian. Texas added Choice as the new running backs coach after the former running backs coach Stan Drayton took the head coaching job with the Temple Owls last week.

With the addition of Choice to the staff for Sark and the Longhorns in place, there could be some fruitful results ahead on the recruiting trail. There is no doubting the recruiting ability that Drayton brought to the table as the Texas running backs coach, but it looks like the results could be even more potent with Choice on staff.

An early name to watch with a connection to Choice is a former Georgia Tech commit and four-star 2023 Norland (FL) running back Javin Simpkins. Choice was the top recruiter after Simpkins, and once the news dropped that he was leaving Georgia Tech for Texas, he de-committed from the Yellow Jackets.

Simpkins officially announced his de-commitment from Georgia Tech on Dec. 12. He announced his de-commitment from Georgia Tech in a post on Twitter on the late afternoon of Dec. 12.

Texas football reportedly piqued the interest of 4-Star 2023 RB Javin Simpkins by hiring RB coach Tashard Choice

The door now appears to be open if Texas wants to add numbers at the running back position in the 2023 class with Choice now on staff. Simpkins would be a valuable blue-chip addition to the 2023 class if Texas decides to push for his commitment and there’s actual traction here.

And according to a report from Orangebloods on Dec. 23 (paid content), there is interest between Choice and Simpkins still after the former Georgia Tech running backs coach was hired by Texas.

Moreover, there was already an offer out from Texas (which came on Aug. 10, 2021) to Simpkins prior to Choice joining the Longhorns staff. Texas hiring Choice should only push the envelope on this connection between the school and Simpkins.

Some of the other schools to watch right now in pursuit of the commitment of Simpkins are the Texas A&M Aggies, Louisville Cardinals, West Virginia Mountaineers, and Indiana Hoosiers. But Texas definitely has to be at or near the top of the list for Simpkins at the moment.

The top running back target for the Longhorns 2023 class right now is still the former five-star El Campo RB commit and in-state product Rueben Owens. But Simpkins should definitely be added to the list of top running back targets to watch for the Longhorns 2023 class during the winter months.
