5 transfer portal targets on Texas’ Christmas wish list
Lonnie Phelps, DE/Edge
This spot on the list was originally reserved for the former Clemson Tigers junior safety and blue-chip recruit Joseph Charleston. But the Mizzou Tigers struck to land a commitment out of the transfer portal from Charleston on Dec. 21.
The good news is that an even better potential fit for the Longhorns given their positional needs has emerged in the transfer portal this week in the former Miami (OH) Redhawks star edge rusher Lonnie Phelps. There aren’t many edge rushers that will show up in the transfer portal this offseason that can make a bigger immediate impact in a positive sense for the Longhorns than Phelps.
You can mark that down now.
Phelps is a name that the Longhorns should pay attention to. He was one of the highest-graded defenders in the MAC this season and one of the highest-graded pass rushers in the entire country. Those are obviously some data points that the Longhorns shouldn’t be ignoring given their lack of a pass rush in 2021.
This season, Phelps registered 30 combined tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks, and one pass breakup. The nearly nine sacks for Phelps this season came on more than 40 total quarterback pressures and 15 quarterback hits (including his 8.5 sacks).
This is a spark to the pass rush that the Longhorns could really use. Texas should be getting in contact with Phelps right away.
