Bleacher Report is known for grading out some of the bigger college football head coaching hires each and every offseason, and this one is no exception, even pertaining to one former Texas football assistant coach. Former Texas running backs coach Stan Drayton was hired to be the next head coach of the Temple Owls last week.

Temple hiring Drayton to be their next head coach didn’t receive too high of marks from Bleacher Report when Brad Shepherd ranked out his best head coaching hires of 2021 so far, which was published on Dec. 22. Shepherd of Bleacher Report ranked Temple hiring Drayton as their next head coach as the 22nd best hire of 28 in total on this list so far in 2021.

Here’s more on what this post from Shepherd of Bleacher Report had to say on Temple hiring Drayton entering the offseason.

"After serving the past five years as associate head coach at Texas, the long-time position coach gets his first chance to run his own program with the Owls, who have had a difficult run following Geoff Collins’ 2018 departure. It’s great to see a good coach and strong recruiter like Drayton get a shot."

Drayton was Texas’ running backs coach from 2017-2021. The Cleveland, OH, native has also served as the running backs coach at other stops such as with the Ohio State Buckeyes, Florida Gators, Syracuse Orange, Tennessee Volunteers, and Mississippi State Bulldogs, at the collegiate level.

He’s also as an offensive assistant and/or running backs coach with the likes of the Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers in the NFL.

Drayton is the only former Texas assistant from Steve Sarkisian’s staff that was hired to be a head coach elsewhere so far. There looked to be some traction at one point with the Washington State Cougars and a pair of Texas assistants in Jeff Banks and Jeff Choate to be their next head coach. But they elected to go with their interim Jake Dickert as their next permanent head coach.

Moreover, Drayton will be replacing the former Temple head coach Rod Carey, who won just four games in the last two seasons with that program. This will be the first head coaching gig for Drayton in his college football coaching career.
