There are only a handful of important targets remaining on the board for the 2022 Texas football recruiting class roughly five weeks ahead of National Signing Day. Texas definitely is looking to get commitments out of the likes of the elite five-star Bowie interior offensive lineman Devon Campbell and five-star Cy Park linebacker Harold Perkins.

Yet, the odds that the Longhorns are able to get a commitment out of Campbell are much greater than getting one from Perkins. The former of those two five-star prospects was long a favorite to land with Texas. The same couldn’t really be said for Perkins.

Head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns couldn’t get it done on the field this fall, leading to Perkins likely giving more interest to other competing schools on the recruiting trail such as the Texas A&M Aggies and LSU Tigers. But Texas has remained a player in Perkins’ recruitment throughout 2021.

Perkins is set to announce his commitment on Jan. 2 at the Under Armour All-America Game. He is one of multiple key blue-chip recruits that will be announcing their decisions this weekend at the All-America Game.

But it sounds like there are still some official visits that Perkins is looking to take after he announces his commitment this weekend. According to a report from 247Sports (paid content) on Dec. 29, Perkins isn’t looking to sign his National Letter of Intent until February. And that reportedly could mean that he will take his three remaining official visits next month.

Does that mean there could be a door opening for Texas in the recruitment of Perkins?

Maybe.

More than anything, I think this means that Perkins isn’t sold completely on one school yet. Texas A&M remained the favorite throughout most of the fall. That would be my pick for his commitment this weekend.

From the sound of it, Perkins is going to explore a few other options coast-to-coast. That could include visiting programs like the Miami Hurricanes and USC Trojans that recently underwent major coaching changes in the last month before he signs his letter of intent.

I would anticipate that Perkins mostly knows what he’s getting out of his presumed top three schools in Texas, Texas A&M, and LSU. These visits are likely to make sure that he screens through all of the options available to him before signing.

Nonetheless, special teams coordinator/tight ends coach Jeff Banks and cornerbacks coach Terry Joseph are going to push this recruitment until the very end. It will be the case with Perkins as it was with five-star Frisco-Liberty wide receiver Evan Stewart and five-star North Shore cornerback Denver Harris.

Perkins would clearly be a massive addition to the Longhorns 2022 class if there is where he ultimately decided to commit to this weekend. Or maybe a late push from Texas could be enough to get Perkins to decide to come to the Forty Acres after all. When it’s all said and done, though, I would anticipate Texas A&M to get his decision unless someone else really blows him away among any schools he visits outside of his top three.
